Writing a Resume

by Adeel Salman

Did you know that a professionally prepared resume will increase the success rate of getting an interview in today's competitive job market. Your resume is your first impression on the employer. It should present your best self. Your resume should highlight your best qualities along with characteristics that are related to the job you are applying for.

There are some key points to think about when you are working on your resume. To start with, the formatting plays an important role. It is the foremost feature of your resume that leaves an impact on the employer as they screen through resumes. The formatting needs to be customized as per the job you are applying for. If you are applying for the position of a journeyman then your resume should be formatted accordingly. Avoid being fancy or using too many graphics. But if you are applying for a creative position then make sure your resume highlights your creative skills through the formatting and design elements.

When sending a soft copy always use a file format that is easy to open on all systems. Always recommended is a word or pdf file. A must avoid format is the picture format.

Further you must always use a reverse chronological order while listing your professional experience, education or membership history etc. Start from the most recent and work down towards your oldest experience. When talking about your professional experience makes sure you are paying attention to the word choices you are using to describe the position. They should clearly highlight the job description and relate to the job you are applying for.

Make your resume concise and to the point. It should not list anything more than what is related to the job you are applying for. You might be expert at graphic design but if you are applying for the position of a cook, that detail is unnecessary.

Do not talk about your personal life. As a first impression it is of no significance to the employer as a detail on the resume.

Lastly when in doubt always seek professional help because a professionally prepared resume only costs about .01% of your first year's salary.
